Grace Local Ministries

Boy Scout Troop 794

  • Leader: Scoutmaster David Miller. David has 16 years of experience in the Boy Scouts. Other leaders include: Kevin Kubota, James Byers, Joshua Byers, and Don Phelps.  
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? Troop 794 meets on Wednesdays from 6-7pm at the Nottingham Green Park. There are also monthly campouts or outings.
  • What is the purpose of the ministry? Who are you trying to reach? To teach leadership through an outdoor educational program and share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the next generation. 
  • Prayer items: Pray for our boys' safety and they would grow in favor with God and man; Pray that we may have an influence on the boys and their families for them to hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus.

Our church does not financially support the national Boy Scout organization nor agree with its recent stances on gender issues. We do support the intentional Christian outreach to the young men in Troop 794.

Commonwealth Senior Living - Assisted Living

  • Leaders: Judy Abell, Colleen Eckard, and Connie Schoonover. Judy has been involved at Commonwealth for 6 years, Colleen for 3 years, and Connie for 2 years.  
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? Twice a month Bible studies with residents at Commonwealth Senior Living. Typically spend 15 minutes each week singing hymns with a resident serving as song leader and then 30 minutes reading, studying, and discussing the Scriptures. 
  • What is the purpose of your ministry? To promote God's faithfulness and provision of salvation through the use of Bible stories with the goal of reaching mentally intact residents. Bible study attendance averages around 12 residents.    
  • Prayer items: Pray for residents who meet twice monthly to sing hymns, read, and discuss Scripture and fellowship together. Ask God for additional leadership to assist. Specifically, Judy is looking for younger individuals to get involved and help lead the ministry.

English Club at Regency Square Mall 

  • Leader: The leaders of the ministry are members at Staples Mill Baptist Church. However Greg Pinkard (Grace Member) is regularly involved in the ministry.  
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? Meets every Monday at Regency Square Mall from 6:30-8pm. Minimal preparation needed. Volunteers help new English speakers improve their language skills via discussion, vocabulary, group activities, and Bible stories. 
  • What is the purpose of the ministry? To assist and share the love of Christ with immigrants and refugees. 
  • Current ministry needs: More volunteers needed. 
  • Prayer items: Pray for Dave and Susan Fogg and other leaders: for their stamina and encouragement to keep up with developing material to teach and with people needs; for more men to attend; for the gospel to become clear to those from other faiths as Bible stories are presented each week.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Freeman High School

  • Leader: Kevin Kubota. Kevin has led FCA at Freeman for 3 years. 
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? Meets every Friday at 8am at Douglas Freeman High School. 
  • What is the purpose of the ministry? To provide encouragement and fellowship for students at Freeman.   
  • Prayer items: Pray that the Christian students at Freeman would live out their faith everyday in a tough environment. Pray that they are intentional in reaching their peers with the love of Jesus.

Gideons International 

  • Leader: Tim Smith, George Latham, and Kevin Kubota. Tim has led this ministry for 20 years.  
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? Yearly events such as graduation and regular meetings. 
  • What is the purpose of the ministry? To win the lost to Jesus Christ.  
  • Prayer items: Pray for the Bible Blitz distribution of 60,000 Bibles during the 3rd weekend in October.

Godwin High School Ministry

  • Leader: Paul Sheaffer. Paul has been leading this ministry for 4 years.   
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? Faculty and staff dinners (2x a year). Yearly events such as teacher appreciation day, back to school cook-out, gift bags for staff, and more. Grace members involved in ministry to families in need. Time commitment fluctuates based on the time of the year. 30 minutes to 4 hours a month. 
  • What is the purpose of the ministry? To show the unfailing love of Jesus to the Godwin community by meeting practical needs and to establish relationships of trust to share the gospel. 
  • Current ministry needs: Apprentice to help facilitate and lead the ministry to the Godwin community. 
  • Prayer items: Pray that God would provide an opportunity for our church to minister on campus weekly. Pray that God open a door for our involvement in the Male Empowerment Program. Pray that our involvement in the Fall parent/teacher conference lays further groundwork for gospel ministry.

Grace Care Ministry 

  • Leader: Mattie Collins. Mattie has led the care ministry for 5 years. The ministry has been active for over thirty years. 
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? Usually the care ministry answers requests that come into the church through phone, email, or walk-in. Time commitment will vary due to needs requested.  
  • What is the purpose of your ministry? To assist people in need for emergency help such as rent, power bill, etc. This ministry assists both Grace and non-Grace members.  
  • Prayer items: Pray for wisdom in responding to requests for assistance. Pray for guidance in determining additional means to meet needs other than one time financial gifts.

Pregnancy Resource Center of Metro Richmond

  • Leader: This is a ministry established and lead by non-Grace members. However, one of members (Sherry Pinkard) is a volunteer at PRC and acts as a liaison between our church and PRC.     
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? PRC has two locations. One is in Willow Lawn located at: 1510 Willow Lawn Drive. Suite 200. Richmond, VA 23230 The second office is located at: 5501 Midlothian Turnpike, Richmond, VA 23225. Time commitment varies based on role and availability of volunteer. 
  • What is the purpose of the ministry? Since 1983, the PRC of Metro Richmond has served thousands of women and men in the greater RVA community. It's their goal to provide individuals with compassionate care, objective information and practical resources on your pregnancy options so that they can make a confident, fully informed decision.
  • Current ministry needs: Please contact Sherry Pinkard for more information.   
  • Prayer items: Pray for wisdom as they advocate and provide resources for moms, dads and their unborn children. Praise God for the opening of a new medical satellite in Midlothian where PRC will work with at risk women and men with difficulties beyond unplanned pregnancy such as poverty, single parenting, sex trafficking, drug addiction, and language challenges.

Virginia Commonwealth University-Chinese Ministry 

  • Leader: Jim and Jan Fiorelli and Nate Dolan. The Fiorelli's have led the ministry for 3 years. The ministry has been active for at least 10 years.     
  • Where does the ministry or outreach occur? What is the average time commitment? This ministry takes places at VCU and in the Richmond area. There's a Sunday night discussion group. A Tuesday night English class. A Thursday night PhD-level writing class. There is also a Friday night Bible study and fellowship. These are all weekly ongoing events or activities. 
  • What is the purpose of the ministry? To develop friendships with Chinese students that eventually lead them to Christ, helping them become followers and disciples of Jesus, and then laborers in the harvest field. 
  • Current ministry needs: (1) Further funding for an apartment on the edge of VCU which serves as the ministry hub, (2) a young couple or young singles to befriend and disciple Chinese students, and (3) volunteers to serve as language partners to Chinese students.   
  • Prayer items: Ask God to motivate the students to attend the English classes put on by this ministry (professional writing, conversational English, English pronunciation); for gospel sharing opportunities; and for open hearts to receive God's gift of salvation.
